Genetic marker development in Austrian Castor fiber samples for subsequent regional migration and parentage analyses
Abstract
Based on previous cooperation between the institutes INF and IWJ, resulting in a recently published paper on a subset of our beaver sampling from Lower Austria (Kropf, Hölzler & Parz-Gollner 2013), we would like to take the opportunity to enlarge and intensify inter-institute research cooperation. Furthermore, we would like to evolve the methodological spectrum introducing next-generation sequencing (NGS) approaches. Based on the up-to-date marker development, on the long run a number of innovative research questions related to basic biology and ecology of beavers, as well as evolutionary processes in the course of reintroductions and successful expansions shall be answered; results obtained will also play a key role in nature conservation issues and the management of beavers.
