Die Donauinsel
Abstract
Two major flood protection projects (1870-1875 and 1972-1988) have influenced the Danube riverscape in Vienna fundamentally. The aim of the research is to explore the potentials of a man-made riverscape to adapt to changing conditions and demands, focusing on urban riverscape design. On urban scale, we investigate how the two projects influenced and changed the relation between the city and the river up to these days. On local scale, taking the artificial Danube Island as a case study, we focus on the interrelationship of planning processes and urban design.
