Untersuchungen über Ährenfusarioseresistenz von Albanischen Durumweizen
Abstract
Fusarium is an important fungal disease causing Fusarium head blight (FHB) on ears of small grain cereals (e.g. durum wheat, hexaploid wheat, barley etc.). Several Fusarium spp. can cause this disease and they contaminate the kernels with mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are harmfull for Mammalia including man. For the most important mycotoxins (e.g. deoxynivalenol, zearalenone) maximum levels in food and feed are implemented in the EU. Growing wheat cultivars, which are resistant to Fusarium, is the best solution for this mycotoxin problem. By increasing the resistance level, the risk for toxin contamination is reduced. Therefor resistance breeding by introgressing and accumulating resistance factors from different sources is important. To use different resistance genes, a continuous search for new previously unused resistance sources is upmost important. For Durum wheat there is a lack of resistance sources worldwide. The germplasm banc under consideration (Albanian partner) contains several hundred entries of durum wheat. This material was never investigated for resistance to FHB. Hence, this collection is extremely attractive to look for new resistance sources. In the scope of this project the Albanian partner makes the plant material available. The plants will be propagated in the first year to obtain sufficient seeds for the resistance tests. The Austrian partner will transfer know-how on identification and multiplication of Fusarium as well as artificial inoculation techniques including disease assessment to the Albania partner. In the second year the lines will be investigated for FHB resistance. The outcome will be information on Fusarium resistance of the investigated material. Interesting resistance sources will be used in the future for resistance breeding and therefore in the end will contribute to food and feed safety.
