Abstract
Der Klimawandel hat tiefgreifende Auswirkungen auf einen Vielzahl von ökologischen Prozessen und beeinflusst zunehmend die Artenzusammensetzung, Struktur, und Funktion von Ökosystemen. Die hohe Geschwindigkeit des fortschreitenden Wandels stellt vor allem für langlebige Ökosysteme wie Wälder ein Problem dar und limitiert deren Anpassung durch genetische und evolutionäre Prozesse. Durch die zunehmend schlechtere Umweltanpassung steigt das Risiko von abrupten und zerstörerischen Änderungen. Störungen durch Wind, Borkenkäfer und Waldbrand haben in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten bereits deutlich zugenommen. Die langfristigen Änderungen in derartigen Störungsregimes im Wald sowie deren Auswirkungen werden jedoch erst bruchstückhaft verstanden, was eine entsprechende Anpassung im Management von Ökosystemen stark einschränkt. Ziel des vorliegenden Projektes ist es daher, (i) ein tieferes systemisches Verständnis über die Einflussfaktoren auf Störungsregimes zu erlangen, (ii) deren Auswirkungen auf biologische Diversität und Ökosystemleistungen umfassend zu quantifizieren, und basierend auf diesen Erkenntnissen (iii) Strategien zu entwickeln wie Ökosystemmanagement und Gesellschaft mit derartigen Änderungen umgehen können. Zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen werden Waldlandschaften unter gleichen biogeographischen Bedingungen aber unterschiedlicher Bewirtschaftung (Nationalpark vs. bewirtschaftete Landschaft) in Mitteleuropa untersucht. In einem interdisziplinären Ansatz wird für dieses Netzwerk von Studienlandschaften mittels Jahrringanalysen das Störungsregime der letzten Jahrhunderte rekonstruiert, die Ausdehnung aktueller Störungen auf Basis von Fernerkundungsdaten ermittelt, sowie mögliche zukünftige Entwicklungen unter einem Ensemble von Klimaszenarien mittels Computersimulation abgeschätzt. Darauf aufbauend kann zum ersten Mal für eine Region in Europa festgemacht werden ob sich heutige und mögliche zukünftige Störungsregimes signifikant von vergangenen Perioden unterscheiden. Weiters werden die Auswirkungen von sich ändernden Störungsregimes auf Biodiversität abgeschätzt sowie deren Wirkungen auf bereitstellende (Holzproduktion), regulierende (Kohlenstoffspeicherung, Wasserrückhalt), kulturelle (Erholungswert) und unterstützende (Primärproduktion) Ökosystemleistungen quantifiziert. In Zusammenarbeit mit Stakeholdern werden basierend auf Simulationsergebnissen Strategien zum Umgang mit Störungen bei unterschiedlichen Bewirtschaftungszielen (Schutz von Artenvielfalt, Bereitstellung von verschiedenen Ökosystemleistungen) erarbeitet. Darüber hinaus werden als Entscheidungsunterstützung für Politik und Katastrophenschutz risikorelevante Ergebnisse auf regionale Ebene skaliert. Das Projekt wird so nicht nur das Verständnis von Störungsprozessen sowie deren Berücksichtigung im Ökosystemmanagement revolutionieren sondern auch konzeptionelle und methodische Fortschritte in Hinblick auf den Umgang mit Risiko und Resilienz bei abrupten Umweltänderungen liefern.
