Sustainable Management of Water and Fish Resources in Burkina Faso plus
Abstract
From November 2011 to November 2014 the project titled SUSFISH Sustainable Management of Water and Fish Resources in Burkina Faso (www.susfish.boku.ac.at) was coordinated by BOKU. It aimed to strengthen national capacities to manage fisheries by providing reliable data and information to be used in the formulation and implementation of policies and consolidating higher education and research. That success of SUSFISH has encouraged partners to pursue further cooperation within the frame of APPEAR. SUSFISH definitely established the scientific foundations for bio-monitoring of aquatic ecosystems health while incorporating social and political components that together contribute to the improvement of water and fisheries management. However while successfully running SUSFISH 1 it became clear that fully realizing notable sustainability outputs needs much more time than originally planned. All main activities are summarized in work-packages (WP), WP01 is focusing on Water and River Health, which will include sampling, monitoring and assessing biodiversity of fish and benthic invertebrates. Beside the ecological components we will focus on sustainable fisheries and aquaculture enhancement in WP02 Fish Fighting Hunger, Fisheries sustainable aquaculture practices support by value chain analyses will improve food security and explain economic values. Activities about evaluation of the status of conservation of the aquatic ecosystems and environmental impacts (e.g. climate change) and their risks on fisheries and society are formulated in WP03 Impacts of Aquatic Environment on Society. Finally in WP04 Academic Program Development we will enhance a new Master Curriculum available in the national universities and supervise students on Master and PhD level from North and South. Innovation goals for this project will introduce are: testing and implementing monitoring assessment and restoration methods of fish and benthic invertebrates that are linked to water and river health, the frontier of social science research into the effectiveness of governance and how to harmonize environmental risks to biota and society. The results will be used in education (universities and governmental professional schools) and will have practical relevance for food security and health care.
