New silvicultural alternatives in young oak high forests - consequences on high quality timber production.
Abstract
The main objective of this project is to specify the optimum silvicultural practices in stands of Quercus petraea (primarily) and Quercus robur (secondarily) of less than 15 m of height. This consists of 1) specification of criteria to early select the crop trees and 2) specification of the silvicultural practices to be performed on behalf of these selected trees. The second objective is the creation of modelling and simulation tools to test the effect on harvested timber of such an innovative silviculture performed in up-to-15-m-height stands. The results should provide advice to the foresters, specification of the wood properties and drying behaviour, and a decision support tool for the forest managers taking into account the requirements of the joinery and furniture industries.
