Sicherstellung der Produktionsvielfalt und des Einkommens von Kleinbauern in Trockengebieten am Beispiel der Lämmermast in Kleinasien und Nordafrika
Abstract
Human population growth and the derived increase in demand for animal products such as milk and meat have encouraged a trend of production diversification from traditional sheep production systems in the Syrian Arab Republic. Lamb fattening systems have thus emerged over the last decade especially in peri-urban areas. These systems have developed and benefited especially from the increasing demand for sheep and lamb meat in the Middle Eastern regions. Objective of the project is to develop tools for production diversification, targeting income generation and livelihood improvement of resource proor producer on the basis of identified market opportunities. In a market-oriented and community based approach, using an adaptive and participatory research framework, constraints and opportunities will be identified. Trials will be conducted using different combinations of protein and energy levels to evaluate breed potentials. This assessment will consider recommendations for breeding and management of genetic resources in accordance to current breeding conditions and structures in Syria, Jordan and Tunisia.
