The objectives of SENSOR is to deliver an ex-ante Sustainability Impact Assessment Tools (SIAT) to support decision making on European policies related to multifunctional land use in European regions. SIAT will be a user-oriented set of operational tools applying spatial reference frameworks and data management systems for assessing trade-off relations regarding cost-benefit and environmental effects of different EU policy options with regard to their impact on landscape functions paying special attention to sensitive areas. While specifically designed for economic valuation of social-environmental goods and services, SIAT will link existing European data sets with targeted region-specific information on problems, risks and thresholds of sustainability by making use of participatory approaches and policy scenarios.

The scientific and technological objectives are:
• Analyze the combined, synergetic and inter-related policy effects for various sectors on land use with regard to sustainability objectives at the Europe level;
• Develop spatial reference frameworks and regional policy scenarios for identifying problems, risks and thresholds of sustainability at the regional level;
• Design a data-driven, user-oriented desk-top tool-set that allows European decision makers to run ex-ante Sustainability Impact Assessment for concrete policy options.
