PLATINA - Platform for the implementation of NAIADES
Abstract
The ultimate objective within this area is to ensure the proper integration of environmental aspects in the development and maintenance of inland waterway infrastructure, in line with the targets of the Water Framework Directive. PLATINA will contribute to this overall objective by: _ Providing technical guidelines regarding sustainable waterway development that build upon the existing interdisciplinary dialogue on sustainable waterway development; _ Raising awareness and know-how among inland waterway planners and policy makers about environmentally friendly waterway development practices and conditions under which projects can proceed. Although some measures already have been taken to avoid negative effects of navigation on river environment, further actions will be necessary to progress. In addition to issues such as avoiding pollution from shipping, the issue of hydro-morphological alterations to rivers is one of the main ecological pressures resulting from navigation. Scientific assessments will be carried out and issue papers will be drafted on this specific topic. The assessment will take a case-study approach to survey and evaluate existing and future pressures from inland navigation in combination with other pressures (i.e. hydropower) on eco-systems along the Upper, Middle and Lower Danube. The issue papers should result in a generally accepted assessment framework that can also be used for other river basins. This way, the mutual understanding of multi-purpose use of waterways can be fostered effectively across Europe.
