Integrated processing and control systems for sustainable forest production in mountain areas
Abstract
The SLOPE project aims to address some of the organizational and technical problems posed by forest harvesting in mountain conditions, improving spatial information by integrating information from remote sensing, unmanned aerial vehicles and terrestrial laser scanner surveying systems. The resulting integrated information system will be designed to characterize and plan the use of the forest resources, optimize the forest road network use, manage the logistics and assess the optimal position of each single cable yarder corridor. The key benefit of such a system is that it enables near real time control of operations that can integrate information on timber material origin, quality and process quantities along the supply chain in order to optimize procedures and avoid delay times in operations. For instance, it allows coordination of the transport fleet in such a way that it avoids saturation of storage areas at the cable crane landing.
