Abstract
The project "copper stabilization in vineyard soils" (KUSTAW) aims at the reduction of copper bioavailability in topsoil layers of vineyards. The necessity of such measures is mainly caused by the long-term application of copper-based pesticides that resulted in soil concentrations significantly exceeding biological effect levels (above 55-65 mg Cu / kg). The project KUSTAW intends to develop methods for reducing the bioavailability of copper and improving soil fertility and soil life especially for those wine-growing regions where geological conditions favor copper bioavailability and hence raise eco-toxicological effects. This may be achieved through the application of organic soil additives like compost and biochar that are characterized by both excellent heavy metal sorption capacity and soil amelioration potential, and may be viewed as longer-term mitigation strategies. In the project KUSTAW, effective soil additives for the reduction of copper bioavailability shall be developed.
