Use of a wireless crane scale in round wood transport – A detailed process and performance analysis
Abstract
According to the EU Directive 2015/719 which is laying down maximum authorised dimension and weights subsection 13 is pointing out to take measures for the detection of infringements of vehicles regarding weight limits until May, 27 2021 to ensure undistorted competition between operators. This is directly affecting the round wood transport in Austria. For weighing respectively estimating the transported load of round wood with truck and trailer from forest to customer different technical solutions are available but not common. Additionally detailed information regarding the performance of crane scales in round wood transport is not available. Using crane scales in round wood transport only an accurate estimation of the load is interesting not an exact weight for sale and contracting. But this can ensure that weight limits are not exceeded and load capacities will be utilized. At the moment there are different technical solutions available on the market. A current product for estimation the load in round wood transport combines the information of hydraulic pressure and acceleration whereby a classical weighing link can be omitted. Both, the latest invention and a classic weighing link with integrated acceleration sensors should be analyzed and tested regarding the following aims: • Carrying out a market overview for current solutions regarding crane scales for round wood transport • Detailed process- and performance analysis of transport activities, accuracy and potential support for drivers and entrepreneurs during their daily business • Economic assessment of acquiring and using crane scales in round wood transport based on detailed process- and performance analysis
