Woody plants on dikes and levees - phase V
Abstract
Recent floods have once again drawn attention to the stability and maintenance of levees. Specifically, the focus is on the relationship between vegetation and the structural integrity of levees. Current standards regard dense turf to be the safest vegetation cover and many guidelines ban woody vegetation from levees. Many assumptions are based on experience involving problematic and maladjusted woody vegetation (e.g. single trees, groups of trees) and case reports rather than scientific studies. Standards are justified by an absence of data which would clearly establish the relationship between woody vegetation and the structural impairment of dikes. Hence, the effects of small to medium growing, flexible woody plants on structural integrity and maintenance on levees are investigated in a project, funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology, the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management and the Provincial Government of Lower Austria.
