Development of a concept to promote sustainable mobility in rural areas when starting a family
Abstract
Climate change and environmental pollution are the current problems of our time. Thus, the transport system should be made more sustainable and efficient. Emissions in the transport sector are still increasing and generate a large part of Austria's CO2 emissions. At the same time, according to WHO data, 33 percent of the Austrian population are physically inactive to such an extent that negative effects on their health are likely. The ANFANG research project addresses these challenges with the focus on the mobility of families with young children. Mobility behavior is shaped already in childhood, so adults should be role models of sustainable mobility. However, in life change phases, such as the birth of a child, mobility behavior often changed and sustainable mobility behavior is shifted to motorized individual transport. A not inconsiderable part of car mobility can be traced back to habits formed in the past and not necessarily to rational decisions. While various measures to promote active and sustainable mobility are increasingly coming into the focus of research and planning in the urban context, rural areas seem to be relatively unaffected by this development. In order to counteract this situation in the long term, the ANFANG project dealt with measures promoting walking, cycling and the use of public transport on everyday trips by families with young children in rural areas. The following objectives with regard to mobility of families with young children were pursued: *) to improve the knowledge of mobility behavior, *) to generate knowledge about individual and social aspects, *) to identify wishes and barriers of families *) to develop measures promoting active and sustainable mobility. The necessary data were collected by using analysis of the Austrian Mobility Survey 2013/14, interviews with (expectant) parents and workshops with providers of mobility services and political decision-makers. The results were summarized in a basic report on mobility of families with young children in Austria and in a concept promoting active mobility of families. Both are available to a large number of stakeholders (such as communities or local companies) for further use
