Verification of a concept for the decentralized biological treatment of surface runoff containing deicer by in situ tests at an airport
Abstract
Airport surface runoff during winter time contains high concentrations of pavement de-icing fluids. Uncontrolled discharge of this runoff poses a potential environmental hazard for the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem. One possibility is a soil based filter to treat the contaminated surface runoff. The main goal is to determine the capability of the in-situ soil and a soil based filter using structural filter materials to degrade the organic pollutants. Based on previous results, the use of a soil based filter shows to be a promising, passive, natural based solution for the treatment of de-icing runoff. This should now be verified in small areas in-situ at an airport.
