The UN Agenda 2030 calls for urgent and resolute action to shape our future in a sustainable way and facilitates this transformation with the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs). Together with the global community of countries, Austria stands before a tremendous task to implement and meet the SDGs. It is decisive to identify policy pathways that achieve several SDGs at once and at the same time avoid those that impede the achievement of other goals. At the same time, Austria is committed by the Paris Agreement to act effectively in regard to climate change mitigation and adaptation. In the last decade, the Austrian climate research community has supported this process with scientific results and policy recommendations in a pro-active way.
The project CliPo_Interlink builds on these results and aims at a systematic view of the interactions and interlinkages between policy options for climate change mitigation and adaptation and the targets of the SDGs. The interactions are analysed and evaluated exemplarily in order to reach a conclusion about synergies and trade-offs of these policy recommendations with other SDGs. This is done by applying an evaluation scheme that allows a quantification and priorisation of climate policy measures in regards to their SDG interdependencies. The results of the project can be integrated into the SDG policy option report that will be prepared for the Austrian federal government by several Austrian universities.
