Abstract
The Jewish garden architect Helene Wolf née Pollak etablished a perennial nursery in Weidlingau, in the West of Vienna, in 1921. She later attached a garden design practice to her nursery, which designed several private gardens in and around Vienna in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1928 she was responsible for the design and construction of the new Jewish cemetery at the Vienna Zentralfriedhof.
Later, having been stripped of her firm, Wolf served as a horticultural expert at the Kultusgemeinde and as head of the retraining courses at the Windmühlhöhe nursery and at Hertzka’s school until she received the long-sought-after permit to enter the USA.
Research focus on two points, both investigating Helene Wolf's work for the Vienna Jewish Community: the design for the new Jewish cemetery and her contribution to the horticultural hachshara. The unique results will show the impact of this pioneer woman to Vienna and Jewish culture as well as to garden architecture of the 1920s and 1930s.
