Scientific investigations and development of measures for the sustainable management of gravel spawning grounds
Abstract
The aim of this research project is to investigate and develop alternative measures for the management of gravel spawning grounds at five different locations and to derive measures for future fishery and water management from the results. Three types of measures are examined below: (1) introduction of artificial spawning gravel to points of interest in the water from a hydraulic point of view; (2) mechanical loosening / break up of the existing river substrate at potential gravel spawning sites; and (3) a combination of measures in the form of an introduction of artificial spawning gravel together with large structural elements (large blocks) whose hydraulic effect in (i) low flow results in improved flow conditions at the gravel beds and (ii) prevent erosion of the gravel substrate in flood situations. Furthermore, the goal is to develop specific proposals for measures in the selected test sections, in addition to the aspects of research, which serve as a basis for submitting water projects to the state of the art.
