Strategic web-based maps as instrument for the awareness-raising of stakeholders for the spatial relevance of energy transition and climate protection
Abstract
The main objective of the project STRAKA.web is to foster energy and climate related awareness-raising and decision-making processes as well as the development of strategies for energy transition and climate protection with the help of strategic maps. Hence, an extensive modelling of the energy consumption and the associated greenhouse gas emissions for all so-called KEM-regions (model regions for climate and energy) in Lower Austria is performed at 250m spatial resolution. Subsequently, the project STRAKA.web aims at the optimisation of the heat supply systems by evaluating the suitability of settlement areas for district heating systems. Another target of the project STRAKA.web is the assessment of settlement areas concerning the suitability for climate friendly mobility, that is a mobility of short distances with a high share of non-motorised and public transport. A particular issue of the project STRAKA.web is the integrated consideration of the two fields of action, heat supply and mobility, as well as the linking to aspects of settlement development. The statements to energy and climate related location qualities are cartographically prepared for all KEM-regions and are made accessible to the public on a project-specific website. Based on these strategic maps it is a main objective of the project STRAKA.web to raise awareness for the spatial relevance of energy transition and climate protection within the scope of participatory processes in three selected pilot regions and to lead an interdisciplinary discussion concerning adequate energy and climate related strategies. Within this framework, synergies between the (further) development of energy- and climate-optimised settlement structures and the spare use of land for settlement and infrastructure are emphasised.
