Prozess innovations and digitalisation - new technologies to support the rail road interface
Abstract
Inland terminals are the gateway for transferring goods from road to rail or waterways. However, the interface between road and terminal in particular shows a lack of interoperability and a lack of integrated solutions, both in terms of physical infrastructure and information and communication technology. These system discontinuities mean that transhipment from one mode of transport to another within a transport chain is considered time-consuming and costly. This hampers an increase in the share of combined freight transport and consequently hinders the achievement of national and European climate targets. PRODIGY aims to optimise today's road-terminal interface processes through digitalisation and the use of new (distributed ledger) technologies. The processes of four specific use cases will be re-developed together with different stakeholders under the aspect of using distributed ledger technologies, such as block chain networks and smart contracts.
