Determination of cave crickets (Orthoptera: Rhaphidophoridae) using DNA barcodes - if procurable?
Abstract
DNA barcoding or more generally, using DNA sequences for identification of species might represent a promising tool. Therefore, respective reference data bases are established all over the world. Here, I will test whether tropical cave crickets (Rhaphidophoridae) from Southeast Asia could be determined using this technique by answering the following questions: Which proportion of samples could be identified based on yet existing data bases, including the BOLD system? How many genospecies could be separated based on molecular DNA data irrespectively of the exact species identification? Which basic and advanced needs for successful application of DNA barcoding as determination tool could be derived from the present results?
