Analysis and simulation of harvesting systems in steep terrain.
Abstract
The forest industry is not exempt from the globalisation of markets. To increase competitive competence, steep slope timber harvesting systems must be improved systematically, effectively and efficiently. The 'trial and error' principle used to date requires too high development needs. On the basis of empirical studies, and by incorporating existing models, a prototype for a timber extraction simulation model for steep terrain should be developed with particular consideration for the new walking harvester techology. Key new considerations will be the motion possibilities of these types of machines and the interaction between the steep terrain harvester and the subsequent timber extraction by cable crane. The simulation model should allow both productivity and cost predictions to be made given varied input parameters. On this basis, the future steep terrain harvesting systems can be developed and optimised as well as compared with current systems.
