Evaluation of risks in torrential catchments - mathematical modelling and simulation
Abstract
The interaction of influences upon the protection forest (by man, climate, geology, soil and vegetation) and the resulting effects regarding floods, debris flows, landslides etc. are based on dynamic processes and need extensive data material for the processing of different simulations. Since it is not possible any more to treat the respective parameters and data for an integral problem solution in the usual way the use of mathematically based models with the help of digital and computerized methods is the only effective means. The practical usability lies in an efficient evaluation of risks in catchments. Risk evaluation is not only useful as a decision help for forestry measures (redevelopment of protection forests, afforestation etc.) but it should also be seen as an important part of a completely new identification and evaluation of risk areas. The analysis of the effects of floods and debris flows is carried out qualitatively and quantitatively on the base of neutral evaluation.
