Effects of different legume crops and legume catch crops on yield, quality and diseases of the first following crop (potato) and yield and quality of the second crop (wheat)
Abstract
The yield, the potato health and the tuber quality are substantially affected by the cultivation of suitable preceding crops and catch crops. The enrichment of nitrogen and plant biomass in the soil by these crops is a substantial component of preventive plant protection. The principal purpose of the project is therefore to determine which combination of main crop and catch crop is suitable to achieve healthy, qualitatively and quantitatively appealing potato yields. This research project is conducted on the organically managed area of the Landwirtschaftlichen Fachschule Edelhof in Lower Austria. Altogether the effects of four different variants of main crops and catch crops are examined on yield, quality and diseases of the first following crop (potato) and yield and quality of the second crop (wheat). For each crop rotation variant three potato varieties are cultivated.
