Local knowledge about plant species collected in the wild with use as animal fodder or as veterinary medicine and about traditional crops and elder cultivars in Tyrol (EasternTyrol)
Abstract
Local knowledge in Eastern Tyrol Part I: Plant species collected in the wild with use as animal fodder or as veterinary medicine in EasternTyrol, Austria Gathering of wild plant species is an activity done frequently by farmers, including organic farmers. This activity is also regulated in EEC Regulation 2092/91 for Organic Farming. The gathered species are used as food, teas, ornamentals, as fodder or for human or veterinary medicinal purposes. Due to the restrictions for the use of allopathic medicine in organic farming, the local knowledge of farmers about phototherapy is of importance for the organic farming movement. In this project in Eastern Tyrol the local knowledge of farmers about gathered plant species, their use, processing and the related experience of farmers is studied with tools and methods of ethnobotany during a period of 24 months. The results will be validated by veterinary doctors. In addition the legal framework for the use of gathered plant species in veterinary medicine will be assessed. Local knowledge in Eastern Tyrol Part II: Traditional crops and elder cultivars in EasternTyrol, Austria Propagation of harvested seeds and plantlets of traditional local crops and their varieties is done frequently by farmers, including organic farmers. This activity is regulated in several EEC Regulations, including 2092/91 for Organic Farming. The maintenance of agrobiodiversity through these activities of propagation is an important contribution of farmers to the conservation of cultural and biological diversity worldwide. In this project in Eastern Tyrol the local knowledge of farmers about traditional crops and their varieties, their use, processing and the related experience of farmers is studied with tools and methods of ethnobotany during a period of 24 months. The results will be a basis to elaborate strategies and practices for In Situ Conservation of traditional crops and their varieties in the study area.
