GEN-AU - Fusarium virulence and plant resistance mechanisms
Abstract
The Fusarium graminearum fungus attacks grains and corn (maize), producing substances that are poisonous, have hormonal effects (for example, the mycotoxins deoxynivalenol and zearalenon), and can be hazardous to health. Which gene is it that enables the fungus to attack such an unusually large number of host plants? What mechanisms underlie the great resistance of some types of grains? The goal of this project is to find the genes that determine the virulence of the fungus and the chromosomes in grains that are responsible for greater resistance. This could, on the one hand, reveal new ways to combat the fungus, and on the other hand, lead to cultivation of highly resistant plant varieties.
