Application of soil bioengineering measures in ecological river engineering in the district of Huairou (Province Beijing)
Abstract
The state of the art in river engineering looks about the natural watercourses. The planning process is an interdisciplinary approach and soil bioengineering measures are often used implementing river engineering projects. Soil bioengineering is a technique using plants as “living” construction material for slope stability and to initiate riparian forest on. Using plants as construction material has a long tradition as well in Central Europe as well as in China. However this kind of technique was replaced and consequently forgotten by absolutely technical measures applying concrete as material for constructions. Nowadays soil bioengineering techniques are currently experiencing a comeback especially in Central Europe. These techniques meet the requirements not just from a technical but also from an ecological point of view. Both of the research partners have been cooperating since 2001 in the frame of an international exchange program. Between 2001 and 2006 the research problems were focused on soil bioengineering measures on slope stability, whereas the new project deals with soil bioengineering for river engineering project. First experiments were conducted to test soil bioengineering measures in a practical way on a river engineering project in the district of Huairou (Province Beijing) to convince and to enhance the local authority.
