Gefährdung durch Deponien und Altablagerungen im Hochwasserfall - Risikoanalyse und Minimierung (GEDES)
Abstract
Landfills and old waste deposits contain a large risk potential for men and environment. Whereas the normal operation of landfills and the associated emissions are well documented and assessable, the behaviour of landfills in case of flooding is widely unknown. Numerous studies show that the environmental hazard emanating from conventional municipal solid waste landfill lasts for centuries. The main reason for this, besides the substance inventory of the deposit, is the heterogeneity of the water flow in landfills. During a flood event it has to be assumed that the hydraulic conditions in the landfill body change and that this leads to a substantial mobilisation of pollutants. Additionally water saturation may lead to stability problems of the landfill, which can cause shear and sliding fractures. Up to now the research about landfills focused on I y on controlled operation and did not consider exceptional circumstances like floods. With respect to the long lifetime of a landfill it is quite probable that waste deposits will be effected by a flood event throughout the life cycle, especially under consideration of the climate change. The goal of this project is therefore to investigate the behaviour of landfills and old waste deposits under saturated conditions and to develop basics for assured risk management throughout a flood event.
