Generation of maps and acquisition of biophysical vegetation parameters using remote sensing data in Teak plantations (Tectona grandis) in Costa Rica
Abstract
This project is part of a network of individual projects carried out by the Institute of Soil Science, the Institute of Botany, and the Institute of Silviculture. The project consists of two parts. In the first part, basic maps of the plantations managed by Teak Austria are produced using high resolution satellite images. The maps will contain links to the public road network, paths within the plantations, and borderlines between planted and non-planted areas. Furthermore, a digital terrain model (DTM) will be provided. From the DTM information about slope, aspect, relief etc. will be deduced. In the second part of the project, high resolution satellite images will be used to assess the productivity of Tectona grandis plantations. Leaf area index (LAI) is a key biophysical variable that can be used to derive this kind of information. Based on measurements in the field (Institute of Botany), the correlation between spectral vegetation indices derived from satellite image data and the field-measured LAI will be analysed. If the results are satisfying, the LAI will be downscaled to the whole area of interest.
