Optimization of a food processing facility towards energy-autarky using by-products through simulation
Abstract
In the course of increasing costs for fossil fuels the interest of industrial companies in using renewable energy sources intensifies continuously. The utilization of process-specific organic by-products is the first step towards an energy-autarkical industrial process. Considering the anaerobic digestion of slaughtering by-products in a biogas plant in order to provide heat derived from the CHP, the production of energy on a continuous base is facing a specific loading case behaviour. Displaying the energy-flow through a simulation-software is the fist step for an intelligent integration of renewable and other process integrated energy-sources. In order to ensure the ensured production of energy through the biogas plant, key-steps such as the pasteurisation unit have to be optimized. The operator of the biogas plant using slaughterhouse wastes will have to meet high requirements of the process-control. Based on (experimentally approved) kinetic considerations of the anaerobic degradation process and the influence of ammonia-toxicity the microbiological process will be displayed through a simulation software tool. This will be the base for a process control and decision instrument. The full supply of thermal energy for a slaughterhouse through renewable and climate-neutral sources combined with a high process-security may be guaranteed in the end.
