Abstract
A procedure for estimating extreme river flood flows for the German federal state Sachsen is developed. For predicting flood flows at ungauged sites, two regionalisation methods (Index-Flood-Method and Top-kriging) are compared by cross-validation. One basis of regional frequency analysis is the delineation of flood-homogeneous regions. In the BOKU-coordinated project part, two statistical classification techniques (cluster-analysis and regression trees) are applied to the data set. The relative performances are compared by statistical measures and expert evaluation. For the ultimate purpose of regionalisation, i.e. predicting at ungauged sites, a classification rule (e.g. classification trees or discriminant analysis) is established to allocate catchments to homogeneous regions.
