StartClim2009.C: Anaysis of vulnerability and adaptive measures under conditions of climate change in the Biosphere Reserve 'Wienerwald'
Abstract
The proposed study analyses the vulnerability of forest ecosystems and forest management in the Biosphere Reserve Wiener Wald (focus on area in ownership of ÖBf AG) and analyses optional adaptive measures in forest management to mitigate adverse impacts of climate change. The study approach is a scenario analysis based on the dynamic ecosystem simulation model PICUS v1.42. A cornerstone is the definition of a set of vulnerability indicators in a participative process including the ÖBf AG as well as stakeholders (e.g., WWF Österreich, Wienerwaldkonferenz, Birdlife, Regionalmanagement Niederösterreich). The indicator set shall represent the pillars of sustainability (ecological social, economical). Options for integration within the ÖBF AG internal Sustainability Balanced Score Card will be analysed as well. Indicators will be defined at stand level as well as landscape level to account for issues such as tourism and employment effects. Particular emphasis will be placed on the consideration of risk factors (i.e. disturbances) in forest management (bark beetles, susceptibility to storm damage, etc.). The analysis period is 2000-2100. Minimum of three transient regionalized climate change scenarios will be used in the analysis. Results will be prepared in a format suitable for practical use and made available to all interested parties.
