Regional Office of the European Forest Institute for the Central-Eastern European Region - EFICEEC
Abstract
EFICEEC is the Central-East European Regional Office of the European Forest Institute. It comprises a forestry research network of currently 30 partner institutions in Central- and Eastern Europe. EFICEEC is an international research unit providing integrated forestry-related research with a special focus on Central East European (CEE) countries. In times of global environmental changes and changing demands of modern society it strives to support sustainable land use and innovation in forestry and the forest sector through research, networking, capacity building and advocacy. The work of EFICEEC is organised in three Work Areas: 1. Forest sector policy and economics 2. Land use change in the context of climate change and bio-energy 3. Forest Ecosystem Management The Work Area on forest sector policy and economics builds on and continues the work of the EFI Project Centre INNOFORCE. This area focuses on three sub-areas: (a) forest policy, governance change and economics, (b) innovation, (c) sustainability measurement. In this pillar activities continue and expand work undertaken in EFI PC INNOFORCE which covered innovation research and innovation policy. The regional office is particularly interested in sustainability and innovation in forestry and forest-based industries and related policies. The work in land use change in the context of climate change and bio-energy focuses on land use change models and modelling applied in the CEE region in the “ research” competence area, and will engage in capacity building for young researchers with regard to cross-sectoral land use modelling. It will particularly focus on climate change and bioenergy related issues of land-use change. The work area forest ecosystem management covers natural and technical sciences. It will focus on forest ecosystem management modelling, multi criteria decision making, forests and landscape and their protection function. It will also look at the issue of potential climate change impacts and on forests for energy production, in co-ordination with Work Area 2. In addition, work is foreseen in forest genetics, forest protection, forest monitoring. Overall, the establishment of the regional office at BOKU Vienna shall on the one hand illustrate the Austrian commitment to sustainable forest management in an international context, and shall on the other hand extend the scientific capacities of forest research in Austria. EFICEEC shall contribute to the implementation of the MCPFE (Forest Europe) work programme such as the Vienna resolution V2 of the Ministerial Conference for the Protection of Forests in Europe. The work further aims to contribute to the forest dialogue in Austria as well as to sustainable forest management in Europe with a focus on Central and Eastern Europe. The expected results will be as follows: - networking for regional research partners with the aim of knowledge exchange and dissemination in the international scientific community as well as in practice; - internationally recognised contributions to the described research areas and their scientific advancement as well as practice relevant results; - innovative contributions to teaching in relevant themes on national and international levels as well as capacity building at and institutional development of the partners.
