COMET K2 competence center for tribology
Abstract
The Institute for Environmental Biotechnology will offer biotests and biodegradability method development to the members of the competence centre K2 XTribology. Experience gained during the last 14 years could be used to analyse fresh lubricants and additives as well as used materials and to assess risks if those substances when released into the environment or when they become waste after the intended lifetime (criterion H14 in the European Waste List 2000/532/EC). Ecotoxicity of a material is measured by application of a set of biotests, using ecologically representative or using model organisms of different trophic levels, such as: bacteria (Vibrio fischeri), algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, Chlorella sp.), fungi (to be chosen later), water fleas (Daphnia magna), higher plants (Lepidium sativum, Lemna minor), earthworms (Eisenia sp. or Dendrobena sp.) and a mutagenic test (to be chosen later). Almost all those biotest systems are standardised and have already proven to be reproducible and repeatable for solid, for leachable and for water soluble substances or aqueous samples. Typical measurements of short time and chronic exposures will be: metabolic activity, growth, weight gain, mobility, survival, reproduction and mutagenity. Dose-response relations could be drawn and endpoints like EC-values or LC-values could be calculated.
