Natural and Colourful - Perennial Planting and Sowing in Open Public Space in Lower Austria
Abstract
From 2008 until 2011 the federal state government (“Aktion Natur im Garten”) assigned a research project to improve the use of habitat related planting design in open public space. The aim of the project was to create a register of herbaceous perennial plants corresponding to different references for planting sites in public spaces for the use in Lower Austria. For every revised planting site there is information available; for example implementation, visual performance, maintenance or optimization of the plant inventory. Comparing all 7 tested planting types due to ecological, esthetical and economocal values, the type “Planting with Sowing” had a satisfying to good visual performance and is easy to maintain and low in cost. Thus this type will be remarked for ongoing research: plant species, combinations and managment in evidence of different regional climatic conditions are being implemented, investigated and optimised in six test areas.
