Forests of the Calcareous Alps -Strategies for the Future
Abstract
Methods for a vulnerability assessment of forested sites in the Northern Calcareous Alps are developed based upon data from previous projects (spatial information: WinAlp, process information SicAlp). For test regions, the risk of disturbances and the risk of subsequent soil degradation is quantified, and the demand for forest interventions is derived. Considering limited availability of financial resources for such interventions in protected forests, these can be targeted to areas where highest efficiency can be expected. The ecological effect of gap regeneration should be documented for test sites. Measurements of and models for erosion, nutrient balances, water budgets and carbon cycle are the basis for the risk assessment described above.
