UNEP 2018-2020 - participation in the International Resource Panel (IRP)
Abstract
The International Resource Panel of the UN environment program is the most important global scientific board in the thematic area of economics, environment, and climate. The IRP consists of 40 scientists of eminent research institutions and a steering committee drawn from representatives of governments, the European Commission and the UN Environment. The IRP holds two meetings per year where the latest scientific findings are discussed and evaluated against their policy relevance. The IRP prepares and publishes assessment reports and policy recommendations in the area of sustainable use of natural resources and, in particular, their environmental impacts over the full life cycle, in order to contribute to a better understanding of how to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation. The IRP was launched in November 2007 and since the beginning, the Institute of Social Ecology is represented with Univ.Prof. Marina Fischer-Kowalski as Austrian Expert as part of the Expert Panel. In 2011 the Report “Decoupling natural resource use and environmental impacts from economic growth” was published, first authored by Marina Fischer-Kowalski and Mark Swilling. In 2015 and 2016 two other reports under the lead of Marina Fischer-Kowalski are published: the report „International Trade in Resources: A biophysical assessment“ and the report „Global Material Flows and Resource Productivity“. Also in 2016, a global MFA database for the years 1970 to 2010 was established that is publicly available at http://www.resourcepanel.org/global-material-flows-database. In the period 2018 to 2020, our work will focus on the following issues, always in accordance with the IRP work programme: • Further development of the global MFA database • Circular economy issues • Scenarios and modelling of the links between economic growth, resource use and climate change • Cross Cutting Issues in the context of the SDGs
