Metabolomics of cold stress tolerance to plants mediated by psychrotolerant bacteria
Abstract
Metabolomics of cold stress tolerance to plants mediated by psychrotolerant bacteria Cold is a major limiting factor in agricultural fruit production. It is known that some psychrotolerant bacteria can enhance plant acclimation mechanisms against cold. As future climate projections suggest an increased risk of weather extremes including spring frosts, understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying cold stress tolerance in plants is key to develop efficient bioproducts against cold stress. In this collaboration project between Fondazione Edmund Mach, San Michele all’Adige (Michele Perazzolli, Valentina Lazazzara) and BOKU, transcriptomics and metabolomics studies will be combined to investigate the molecular and physiological mechanisms activated against cold stress by psychrotolerant bacteria in crops with high economic value (apple and tomato). We anticipate that this project will reveal a better insight into cold adaptation mechanisms in plants for the further development of bacterial-based products to reduce cold stress in crop production. The planned project will also allow interdisciplinary training of a PhD student in a timely research field in state-of-the art -Omics disciplines.
