Evaluation of farrowing pens
Abstract
The profitability of piglet production is mainly influenced by costs for housing equipment and labour input. Eight different systems of Austrian companies, farrowing pens with and without cages, will be evaluated according to differences in labour input, process engineering and economic in Forschungs- und Bildungsstall für Schweinehaltung Gießhübl GmbH. Colleting and handling of data will be done with a hand-held- or a pocket-PC, which works with a software for measuring and analysing working time requirements. Video technique is used to record control work. Motion and delta detection cameras help to reduce the recording and analysing time. The different time requirements of the different farrowing pens are compared and can be used to calculate different models. Additional, for the whole system of piglet production a classification will be created. The rentability of piglet production depends on biological performance, costs and market prices. Only costs and biological performance can partly be influenced by farmers. The calculations will be done on the basis of gross margin and full costs for each farrowing pen systems, so that variable costs as well as fixed costs are taken into account. On this base it is also possible to compare the calculated product prices due to the different housing equipment and working conditions during suckling as well as to give reasons for higher prices for products from animal friendly systems.
