StartClim2006.B: Risk assessment for the autochthonous occurrence of visceral leishmaniosis in Austria
Abstract
Twelve million people around the world are infected by leishmanias and more than 60.000 die from leishmaniosis every year. The emergence of AIDS around 25 years ago has brought along a supplementary major risk factor for coming down with visceral leishmaniosis. Leishmanias are transmitted by phlebotomines (sandflies), small mammals and in urban areas particularly dogs being important reservoir hosts. For many years it was believed that within Europe sandflies, and thus also leishmanias, do only occur in the Mediterranean region, however, recently leishmaniosis cases without any stay abroad and with no possibility of non-vector associated transmission were described in Central Europe. Finally, disjunctive occurrences of sandflies were found in Germany, the northeast of France and Belgium. Thus, it is in all probability that sandflies do also occur in Austria. This assumption is further corroborated by the fact that also in Austria two cases of leishmaniosis have been described in which an infection abroad could be excluded. The aim of the submitted project is to determine those regions in Austria that allow the occurrence of sandflies due to their climatologic realities, in order to assess the risk for the autochthonous occurrence of visceral leishmaniosis in Austria. Moreover, an early indicator profile and a corresponding appropriate action plan on leishmaniosis in Austria will be compiled.
