Genetic Tools in Forest Protection
Abstract
The research of both institutes targets long horn (Cerambycidae) and scolytid (Scolytinae) beetles in that phylogenetic and phylogeographic questions are approached. Both institutions have long term experience in these species. In the last „Amadée“ project (10-2003) focus was laid on Tomicus and Ips in the entomological part. The data were published at International Congresses and in SCI journals (Sallé et al. 2007; Horn et al. 2009). In this project exchange of ideas and data on Pitypgenes chaclographus and Monochamus spp. will be reinforced. Coralie Bertheau who has been doing her PhD in Orléans under the supervision of Géraldine Roux will be starting a PostDoc at the Institute of Forest Entomology, Vienna in autumn 2009. Here she will work on Pityogenes chalcographus being employed by an Austrian Science Foundation (FWF) project entitled “Ecology and Genetics of Pityogenes chalcographus”. Topics she already started during her PhD on host choice (Bertheau et al. 2009) will be continued in cooperation with the Forest Zoology Laboratory of INRA Orléans. Further we intend to work on Monochamus spp. which is an important vector of the A1 quarantine nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus. The difficulty is that these species are mostly detected as larvae or pupae. In these ontogenetic stages it is almost impossible to determine the species status. Thus we will aim to find a good barcoding strategy. On both topics, host choice of P. chaclographus and barcoding of Monochamus spp. much research was already done in both countries and during the project we aim to summarize joint past efforts and to explore new fields.
