Herbarium as contemporary witness
Abstract
The herbarium (WHB) of the Institute of Botany of the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna contains about 50 000 specimen of higher plants, which are already catalogued in a computer based databank. Beside this, there is a hugh mainly historical collection of mosses of about 20 000 specimen, which is of great scientific interest, but not catalogued. Within this project we want to start with the cataloguing of the collection of mosses. In contrast to higher plants knowledge of historical and recent distribution and endangerment of moss species is weak. The cataloguing of this collection is an important contribution to the checklist and Red Data Book of the mosses of Austria.
