Roots as causing damage of bituminised layer of paths
Abstract
The via donau Österreichische Wasserstraßen GmbH, is beside other tasks responsible for the maintenance of a toe path network of about 300 km. This network of small asphalted roads is used as maintenance access road as well as a cycling path along the Danube. To keep up road safety conditions for the cyclist is connected with high expenses, because of damages caused by roots of nearby growing trees. Within this research project, lead by the Institute of Soil Bioengineering and Landscape construction, the causes and mechanism of the root growth beneath the upper road layers will be investigated. In a second step different approaches to hinder the root growth in the foundation area of the roads will be tested. A special focus will be given on the topographic and hydrographic conditions which can have strong influences on the root architecture.
