EU-LIFE+ - Urban Lake - Alte Donau: Beavermonitoring 2014
Abstract
The “Alte Donau” in Vienna is one of Europe’s largest urban lakes. Due to the location within the metropolitan area the lake is under steady heavy anthropogenic pressure. At the same time it serves as a valuable habitat for diverse fauna and flora. For example, thanks to partly well-structured banks and woody vegetation (especially poplars and willows), beavers have been colonizing the lake since 1999. The project "EU Life + - Urban Lake - Alte Donau" aims at developing an integrated lake management which also considers beaver-activities. As some measures affect the beaver colonies either directly or indirectly (e.g. restoration of banks, tree protection measures,…) a beaver monitoring will also be part of the project. In 2014, in advance of the first habitat measures, a mapping of beaver territories and a determination of colony sizes will be carried out. This pre-monitoring will provide the basis for following surveys and for the evaluation of beaver-related measures and their effects on the beaver population at the Alte Donau.
