SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND ECOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT FOR WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT IN KENYA
Abstract
Agriculture supports the livelihood of 80% of Kenya’s rural population with a GDP contribution of 24%. With this in mind, the Ggovernment of Kenya seeks to promote agricultural intensification and up-scaling in the development agendas (e.g. Kenya Vision 2030) to ensure food security. However, various studies have cited agricultural related residues as contaminating the country’s aquatic ecosystems . They warn that for agricultural intensification to achieve the goals of Kenya’s development agenda, the aquatic ecosystems will be exposed to agrochemical related pollution which could negatively impact the physic-chemical condition of the natural water resources. The purpose of this preparatory project is to prepare a full project proposal that seeks to strengthen academic and local capacities in the management, research and education of water and agricultural sustainabilityin Kenya. The aim of the full project will be to evaluate and adapt monitoring and management methods and a sustainable approach to managing the country’s water resources with regard to agrochemical use, application and management. All these will be based on sound monitoring regimes and methods under appropriate policy framework. The specific objectives of the full project are to: i. Develop scientific based assessment methods for the ecological status of water ecosystems ii. Enhance the capacity for innovative techniques, skills and approaches in agrochemical application, monitoring and reporting iii. Build capacity for local professionals (especially women) and for training of local institutions of higher learning in the south (ACTS and Laikipia University) in policy, practice and fundamental science iv. Implement and promote scientific based policy recommendations for the East African Region
