Fishecological monitoring Alte Donau 2014
Abstract
The "Alte Donau" is an urban lake formed by an old side arm of the former Danube floodplain located in Vienna. It is used for various recreational purposes like swimming, sailing or sports-fishing. Despite stocking activity of important species like the pike, the fish populations suffer from the high degree of usage. A further consequence is the decreasing predation of plant-eating species like the rudd which leads to decreasing growth of macrophytes in the Alte Donau. To establish and preserve an intact distribution of macrophytes in combination with the demands of recreational fisheries, the populations of predatory species like the pike shall be preserved and promoted. The evaluation of fishecologically relevant structures and shorelines (Hozang & Novak, 2013) has shown that the share of near natural and ecologically intact areas is low, especially when the water level is low like in spring. Additionally, the reeds are silting up in some areas like the Kaiserwasser. To counteract this development, the MA45 is trying to restructure such areas with excavations and relinking them with the aquatic zone. Within the scope of the EU-funded Life+ project “Urban Lake Alte Donau”, additional rehabilitation measures are planned at various shoreline areas in the Alte Donau. This project will evaluate the current state of fishecologically relevant structures and habitats with the aim of quantifying and evaluating rehabilitation measures that have been conducted or are planned in the near future.
