Investigation of willow brush mattresses at navigable rivers
Abstract
The embankment stability at navigable waters suffers from hydraulic loads like strong ship induced waves, resulting hydropeaking, strong water-level fluctuations and high flow rate. Willow brush mattresses can reduce or prevent erosion at the embankments of rivers and increase bank stability. But there still is a need for research on the effect and application of willow brush mattresses at big navigable waters and the different effects of tree and shrub willows. In the course of this research project, commissioned by the Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute Karlsruhe, various willow brush mattresses are investigated in laboratory and model tests as well as at the soil bioengineering test section at the Rhine near Worms.
