In Austria, the use of energy wood has roughly doubled since 1990 to present date and it is projected that energy wood demand will further increase in the coming years. This gives incentive to increase the use of forest biomass. With each use of the biomass, nutrients are withdrawn from the forest stands. These losses cannot be covered by nutrient inputs. Thus, in the long term, a reduction in soil fertility is expected. The selection of harvesting method has a great influence on the nutrient balance by depleting different nutrient-rich compartments, and thus significantly influences the local sustainability.

The goal of this project is to analyze how much biomass and nutrients remain in the stand over one rotation period after performing tending operations and thinnings with cable yarders using the whole tree extraction method, and taking into account different regeneration methods. Further measures will be discussed for increasing the remaining biomass in stands and recommendations for practice will be developed.
