Monitoring Alte Donau 2015
Abstract
Since the massive eutrophication of the old Danube side-arm “Alte Donau” in Vienna, the annual physico-chemical and ecological monitoring has become an integral element in managing the various uses that make the Alte Donau a heavily impacted urban lake. The ability to identify and react to possible future deteriorations is subject of the EU funded LIFE+ project “Urban Lake Alte Donau”. It includes the revitalization of concrete banks and the initiation of habitat building structures to improve the habitat availability and quality for different aquatic organisms. The measures are due to be implemented from fall 2015 to spring 2016. To document the positive effects of these measures, this project investigates and pre-monitors fish populations with various methods at the respective sites in the “untere” and “obere” Alte Donau.
