River Ecology Network - Sub-group of the Austrian Network Environmental Research
Abstract
The River Ecology Network is designed to prepare an overview of national and international methodologies used in the environmental assessment of river systems. The framework of such assessments is based on the concept of the ecological integrity - the maintenance of all internal and external processes and attributes, interacting with their environment in such a way, that the biotic community corresponds to the natural state of the relevant aquatic habitat. Based on an evaluation of this overview, state-of-the-art technology, as well as future research priorities, will be defined in order to facilitate the development of more consistent, reproducible and cost-effective set of methods to assess the ecological integrity of rivers.
